It’s like the line from the movie, Pretty Woman. When Richard Gere says to Julia Roberts, “People's reactions to opera the first time they see it is very dramatic; they either love it or they hate it. If they love it, they will always love it. If they don't, they may learn to appreciate it, but it will never become part of their soul.” This holds true for me. While I am completely tone deaf when it comes to playing an instrument, I do however, hold a deep love and passion for music, which has the power to reach inside of me and shake me to the very core.
My husband and I often go to concerts in the city. We once went to an Arties Festival, where musicians from all over the world came to entertain us with their powerful and emotionally charged music. As I sat there with closed eyes, ready to get absorbed into the music, one instrument stood out amongst the others, The Violin. The movement of the bow on the strings of the violin had me completely in its spell. I felt such depths of sadness and then immediately catapulted to immense feelings of joy and happiness. By the time the movement was finished, I had tears in my eyes and couldn’t stop clapping nor stop my feet from rising from my chair to start a standing ovation for the musicians, especially the violinist.
Imagine how young that violinist must have been when she started her journey to mastering that small, powerful and beautiful instrument. Her face as she played the piece morphed from utter despair to heavenly joy. Just by looking at her, you could see she was a happy person with a face full of expressions of love and joy.
By taking the time to pursue our interests and passions, we too could lead happier, fulfilling lives.
